The 2019-2020 Orchestra Season

Here are dates and repertoire for our 2019-2020 Chamber Orchestra Ogden season titled “Exploring The World Through Music”

September 21, 2019 – Music from the Czech Republic, China, and Russia

  • Smetana – Three Dances from “The Bartered Bride”
  • He/Chen – The Butterfly Lover’s Concerto, featuring Shi-Hwa Wang, Professor of Violin at WSU
  • Rimsky-Korsakov – Capriccio Espagnol, Opus 34

November 2, 2019 – Kruger Brothers Concert.  Music from Switzerland by way of North Carolina.

Jens Kruger – Crossroads Ogden.  A musical celebration of Ogden and the railroad, in cooperation with Ogden Friends of Acoustic Music and Imagine Ballet Theatre.  You may have heard our collaboration at Ogden High School in 2012.  This is a new composition, and we know you will like it.

January 25, 2020 – Spanish music from France, music from Germany, the United States, and a swing around back to Russia.

  • Brahms – Academic Festival Overture, Opus 80
  • Weber – Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in f minor, first movement, featuring orchestra clarinetist Shawn Berry
  • Beeson – Prometheus Rapture for Snare Drum and Orchestra, featuring orchestra percussionist Matthew Kinney
  • Stravinsky – Suite No. 2 for Small Orchestra
  • Bizet – Carmen Suite No. 1

March 28, 2020 – Music from the United States, England, and once again either the Czech Republic or the United States.

  • Copland – Fanfare for the Common Man
  • Coleridge-Taylor – The Bamboula, Rhapsodic Dance
  • Dvorak – Symphony No. 8 in G, Opus 88

OR

  • Hanson – Symphony No. 2, Opus 30 “Romantic”

All performances are at Peery’s Egyptian Theater at 7:30 p.m.

About Michael Palumbo

Michael A. Palumbo is Music Director and Conductor of Chamber Orchestra Ogden. For thirty-one years he was the Director of Orchestral Studies and Professor of Viola at WSU, retiring in June of 2013. Michael's conducting credits include performances by the "Stars of the Soviet Ballet" and the "Bolshoi Ballet.” He has conducted All State and other honor orchestras and festivals in the Midwestern and western regions of the United States, and is an assistant conductor for Ballet West in Salt Lake City, Utah. In addition to his conducting, Michael is associate principal violist of the Ballet West Orchestra, and principal violist of the American Festival Orchestra. From 2002 through 2008 Michael was a member of the National Executive Board of the American Viola Society (AVS), and at the 2008 International Viola Congress he received the Founders Award from that organization. In 2014 he was elected President-Elect of the AVS. Michael is a former national secretary of ASTA. He has twice held the office of president of the Utah Chapter of ASTA (UASTA), and has twice been the recipient of the UASTA Educator of the Year award. A long time member of the American Federation of Musicians, he is currently president of Local 104 of the AFM. In1997 he collaborated with David Dalton to found the Utah Viola Society, and served as it’s first president. For recreation Michael likes to take motorcycle trips with his wife, travel, see family, make wine and beer, and play jazz and blues at several local clubs. He also spends a lot of time writing grant proposals to help pay the members of Chamber Orchestra Ogden.
