Reintroducing the Orchestra
After a season and a half of either cancelled concerts or concerts with reduced numbers of musicians, and a limited number of seats for the audience, Chamber Orchestra Ogden begins its 2021-2022 season with the entire orchestra on the stage for the season’s opening concert at Peery’s Egyptian Theater. The September 25th concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m. is entitled “Reintroducing the Orchestra.”
The highlight of this season’s opening concert is Benjamin Britten’s A Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, with Dr. Carey Campbell, WSU’s musicology professor as the narrator. Many of you have no doubt attended Next Ensemble performances where Carey has introduced the music and sometimes narrated and are familiar with his very engaging personality.
The concert will open with Mozart’s Overture to Don Giovanni. Although the opera is sometimes classified as Opera Buffa (comic opera), it is really a mixture of comedy, drama, and supernatural elements.
Next up is Maurice Ravel’s beautiful Pavane for a Dead Princess. Ravel explained that the Pavane for a Dead Princess wasn’t mourning a princess that had died, but a wistful daydream of something a sixteenth-century Spanish princess might have danced to.
Antonin Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances, Opus 46 is a set of eight pieces he wrote as two sets of four. The first four are arguably better known, than the last, and they are the pieces the orchestra will play tonight.
A Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra will be the final piece on the concert. It begins with the full orchestra, but then showcases all the orchestra’s individual sections one by one. The final section is an amazingly complex and inventive fugue, which introduces a completely new tune in the piccolo, after which the other instruments take it up in what Britten called “a race between the instruments.” The composition finishes in grand style with the original theme restated in the brass while the other instruments swirl madly around it.
Since the purpose of the concert is to reacquaint patrons with the orchestra, members of the orchestra, representing each of the instruments will be gathered in the south hallway outside of the theater. They will show and demonstrate their instruments to all who are interested from 6:30-7:15. Since the orchestra is playing A Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, please bring your children and give them a chance to see these instruments up close. All children ages 8 and over are welcome.

They may also be purchased online at https://www.ogdenpet.com/tickets Tickets will also be available at the door one hour before each concert begins. Season tickets are available for $20.00 for the three concerts at Peery’s. The summer Untamed POPS! concert at the Ogden Amphitheater is free.
As always, active military, veterans, and their families are admitted without charge to all COO concerts, as are students ages 8-18.
Well-behaved children 8 and older are welcome to attend this, and all COO concerts.
